Philippine Ambassador Highlights Filipino Culture and Community Unity as Sources of Soft Power at Upp’s 5th Anniversary

ISLAMABAD, 18 October 2026—Philippine Ambassador to Pakistan H.E. Dr. Emmanuel R. Fernandez and his spouse, Mme. Alicia Kalaw-Fernandez, joined members of the United Pinoys in Pakistan (UPP) in celebrating the organization’s fifth anniversary at the Best Western Premier Hotel in Islamabad.

The celebration brought together members of the Filipino community for an afternoon of fellowship, recognition, and cultural performances, highlighted by the induction of UPP’s newly elected officers, the awarding of certificates to members for their invaluable support and service, and the organization’s Ms. UPP 2026 competition.

Ambassador Fernandez administered the oath of office to UPP’s newly elected officers and delivered an inspirational message as Chief Guest, emphasizing the importance of showcasing the richness of Filipino culture as a means of strengthening the Philippines’ soft power.

Contrasting hard power, which rests on a country’s military and economic capabilities, with soft power, which derives from its culture, values, and international appeal, the Ambassador observed that while the Philippines may have limitations in hard power, it possesses considerable strengths and untapped potential in soft power.

He stressed that the Philippine Embassy and Filipinos overseas have an important role to play in promoting the country’s cultural heritage and strengthening its international standing. He further underscored that enhancing Philippine soft power also requires preserving and improving the good reputation Filipinos have earned through their work and conduct, maintaining unity within Filipino communities abroad, and nurturing a strong sense of national pride.

The program featured musical and dance performances by members of the Filipino community from Lahore and Islamabad, celebrating Filipino talent, creativity, and cultural identity. The Ms. UPP 2026 competition (whose panel of judges was chaired by Mme. Alicia Kalaw Fernandez) and other activities added to the festive atmosphere.

The anniversary celebration concluded with fellowship activities, including singing, dancing, and karaoke, providing an opportunity for members and guests to strengthen friendships and reinforce their bonds as a community.

The Philippine Embassy in Islamabad recognizes the valuable role of Filipino community organizations such as UPP in fostering unity among Filipinos in Pakistan, promoting Philippine culture, and contributing to a positive image of the Philippines abroad. END
