ISLAMABAD, 12 August 2026—The Philippine Embassy in Islamabad received Mr. Shafiqat Rasool, President and Editor-in-Chief of the International Institute for Regional and International Studies (IIRIS), for a courtesy call on Ambassador Emmanuel R. Fernandez.
The meeting provided an opportunity to exchange views on possible areas of cooperation in support of the Philippines’ ASEAN Chairship 2026, particularly in promoting greater dialogue and engagement among ASEAN and Pakistani stakeholders.
Among the ideas discussed were possible forums on peace and regional stability, prosperity and economic cooperation, and youth and education, as well as initiatives promoting people-to-people and cultural ties. The discussions also touched on possible academic and research cooperation, including opportunities for Filipino students and engagement with Pakistan’s Higher Education Commission.
The Embassy and IIRIS also exchanged ideas on cultural diplomacy initiatives that could help promote greater awareness and appreciation of the Philippines and ASEAN in Pakistan. Possible activities discussed included cultural exhibitions and other public diplomacy initiatives.
Ambassador Fernandez welcomed IIRIS’ interest in working with the Embassy and expressed hope that the discussions could lead to concrete and mutually beneficial initiatives during the Philippines’ ASEAN Chairship. IIRIS committed to provide concept notes outlining proposed activities, including their objectives, participants, venues, and the prospective role of the Philippines and other ASEAN partners.
