ISLAMABAD, 12 May 2026—The Philippine Embassy in Islamabad participated in the 2026 Online Internship Program (OIP) Lecture Series on “ASEAN and Democracy” held virtually on 12 May 2026 in cooperation with the Embassy of Indonesia, the ASEAN Committee in Islamabad (ACI), and the University of the Punjab, a partner academic institution in Pakistan.
The highlight of the session was the lecture delivered by H.E. Ambassador Elizabeth P. Buensuceso, the Philippines’ Eminent Person to the High-Level Task Force on ASEAN Community’s Post-2025 Vision, who served as Subject Matter Expert and Resource Speaker. Ambassador Buensuceso delivered a thoughtful and wide-ranging presentation on ASEAN centrality, consensus-building, peaceful dispute settlement, regional economic integration, and ASEAN’s evolving role in promoting peace, stability, and inclusive growth in the Indo-Pacific region.
Her lecture was warmly received by the Punjab University students, faculty members, and other participants, for the clarity, depth, and practical insights she shared from her decades of diplomatic experience and leadership in ASEAN affairs.
The session also explored ASEAN–Pakistan relations and opportunities for cooperation in education, digitalization, trade, and youth engagement, generating lively interest among participants regarding future avenues for ASEAN-Pakistan collaboration.
Ambassador Emmanuel R. Fernandez led the Philippine participation in the program; while Ms. Rain R. Mendoza, Third Secretary and Vice Consul of the Philippine Embassy, served as moderator alongside representatives from the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia.
The event underscored the Philippines’ continued commitment to promoting a rules-based regional order, people-to-people connectivity, and constructive engagement with academic institutions and future leaders in Pakistan. It likewise highlighted the important role of women in diplomacy and foreign policy leadership, with Ambassador Buensuceso sharing Philippine expertise and experience before a highly engaged Pakistani audience.
The OIP 2026 forms part of ASEAN’s broader academic and public diplomacy outreach initiatives in Pakistan aimed at strengthening understanding of ASEAN’s principles of cooperation, inclusivity, consensus-building, and peaceful coexistence. END
