LAHORE, 27–28 December 2025—The Philippine Embassy in Islamabad successfully conducted a two-day consular mission in Lahore on 27–28 December 2025, delivering essential services to the Filipino community while advancing cultural diplomacy, historical remembrance, and gender empowerment initiatives.
A 10-member Embassy delegation attended to numerous consular concerns, including passport applications, jurat and notarial services, and general consular inquiries, bringing government services closer to Filipinos residing and working in Punjab. The mission underscored the Embassy’s commitment to ensuring accessible, responsive, and people-centered consular assistance across Pakistan.
The Embassy delegation was composed of Third Secretary and Vice Consul Rain R. Mendoza, Administrative Officer Christian Glenn Baggas, and locally engaged Foreign Service staff Billy Aguilar, Hamza Ali Khan, Anwar Din, Hemayun Masood Sherwani, Asmat Ullah Shah, Bakhtawar Shah, Muhammad Iqbal, and Shujaat Ali Umer.
The consular outreach was meaningfully paired with the advance commemoration of the 129th anniversary of the martyrdom of Dr. José P. Rizal, the Philippines’ national hero, held on 28 December 2025 at the Philippine Honorary Consulate in Lahore. The solemn yet celebratory occasion was graciously hosted by Philippine Honorary Consul Mr. Fahdel Sheikh and attended by members of the Filipino community, representatives of the Lahore business sector, and honorary consuls from various countries.
Prior to the formal program, a Catholic Mass was celebrated at the Consulate, during which Fr. Andrew Wong, SDB, reflected on Dr. Rizal’s enduring relevance, particularly as a role model for today’s youth—an intellectual, patriot, and migrant whose life and sacrifices continue to inspire Filipinos around the world.
A highlight of the program was the formal presentation of the Philippine coat-of-arms to Honorary Consul Sheikh, witnessed by Filipino and Pakistani guests alike—symbolizing trust, partnership, and the shared responsibility of promoting Philippine interests and values in Lahore.
The program also featured a thoughtful exhortation on the life and works of Dr. Rizal delivered by Ms. Virginia Calvin, who emphasized Rizal’s exceptional intellect, moral clarity, and relevance to overseas Filipinos, noting that Rizal himself experienced life as a migrant and understood the challenges and aspirations of Filipinos abroad.
The commemoration was further enriched by the participation of P/Col. Wilbert Charlie Perry Divina of the Office of the Philippine Police Attaché, who delivered the message of the Chief of the Philippine National Police. Following his remarks, the wreath-laying ceremony was conducted to honor Dr. Rizal, with wreaths offered by the Philippine Embassy, the Honorary Consulate, and the Filipino community, generously sponsored by the Honorary Consulate. This solemn tribute reaffirmed the collective respect and admiration of Filipinos in Lahore for their national hero.
Balancing solemn remembrance with community fellowship, the celebration included interactive games and activities organized by the Honorary Consulate, fostering camaraderie among attendees—young and old, long-time residents and newcomers alike. Significantly, on top of providing a fun respite from daily routines and a venue for relaxation, the event integrated a Gender and Development (GAD) component through a mini-bazaar that provided Filipino women entrepreneurs a platform to showcase and sell their products, including home-prepared delicacies. This initiative supported women’s economic participation, visibility, and empowerment—contributing meaningfully to the DFA’s gender mainstreaming objectives and demonstrating how community gatherings can also serve as avenues for inclusive development.
Complementing the mission’s diplomatic and community activities, the delegation also participated in a cultural exchange experience organized by Honorary Consul Sheikh and Lahore Filipino Community leaders, including visits to the Wagah Border—where members witnessed the historic and symbolic changing-of-the-guards ceremony between Pakistan and India—and the Shalimar Gardens, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The experience offered Filipino and Pakistani participants a deeper appreciation of shared history, identity, and the power of cultural heritage as a bridge between nations. Such engagements underscore the Embassy’s commitment to public and cultural diplomacy, fostering mutual understanding beyond formal dialogues.
